If we succeed in harnessing the power of evolution to create complex synthetic organisms capable of sophisticated information processing and behavior, we will be faced with the problems of how to live harmoniously with them. Given evolution's selfish nature and capability to improve performance, there exists the potential for a conflict arising through a struggle for dominance between organic and synthetic organisms. It will be a challenge to even agree on what the most desirable outcome should be, and harder still to accomplish it. In the end the outcome is likely to emerge from the bottom up through the interactions of the players, rather than being decided through rational deliberations.
