むかし ある ところ に、 こころ の
やさしい おじいさん と おばあさん が、
すんで いました。
ある日（ひ） の こと です。
おばあさん が 川（かわ） で せんたく を して
いる と、 川上（かみ） から 白（しろ）い いぬ が いた に
のって、 とっぷん たっぷん ながれて きました。
おばあさん は 子いぬ を ひろいあげ て、
いえ へ かえって いきました。

むかし ある ところ に、
Long ago in some place,

こころ の やさしい おじいさん と おばあさん が、 すんで いました。
there lived an old man and old woman with gentle hearts.

ある日（ひ） の こと です。
It happened one day.

おばあさん が 川（かわ） で せんたく を して いる と、
When the old woman was washing clothes in the river,

川上（かみ） から 白（しろ）い いぬ が いた に のって、
from up river a white dog riding on a board,

とっぷん たっぷん ながれて きました。
toppun tappun, came floating up.

おばあさん は 子いぬ を ひろいあげ て、
The old woman picked up the puppy, and

いえ へ かえって いきました。
returned home.

川 に ながした んじゃ。 よし、 よし、
おまえ は きょう から うち の
いぬ だよ。」
おじいさん も おおよろこび です。
子いぬ は うれし そうに、 くんくん
あまえました。
子ども の いない ふたり は、 子いぬ に
シロ と 名（な）づけて、 赤（あか）い くびわ を
つけて あげました。
シロ は、 ちゃわん 一（いっ）ぱい ごはん を
やる と、 一ぱい だけ 大（おお）きく なりました。
二（に）はい やる と、 二はい だけ 大きく
なって、 げんき に そだって いきました。

「こんな に かわいい 子（こ）いぬ、
"It is such a cute puppy,

だれ が 川 に ながした んじゃ。
who would float the puppy in the river!

よし、 よし、 おまえ は きょう から うち の いぬ だよ。」
Ok, ok, from today you are our dog."

おじいさん も おおよろこび です。
The old man was also very happy.

子いぬ は うれし そうに、 くんくん あまえました。
The puppy happily, kunkun, became tamed.

子ども の いない ふたり は、
The two without children,

子いぬ に シロ と 名（な）づけて、
gave the name Shiro to the puppy, and

赤（あか）い くびわ を つけて あげました。
put on a red collar.

シロ は、 ちゃわん 一（いっ）ぱい ごはん を やる と、
For every bowl of rice that Shiro eats,

一ぱい だけ 大（おお）きく なりました。
he becomes one bowl bigger.

二（に）はい やる と、
For every two bowls that he eats,

二はい だけ 大きく なって、
he becomes two bowls bigger, and

げんき に そだって いきました。
he grew up healthy.

ある 日 の こと です。
おじいさん は、 シロ を つれて、
山（やま） へ いきました。
おじいさん が たきぎ を とって いる と、
シロ が きゅう に ほえて、 まえ足（あし） で
土（つち） を ほりだしました。
「シロ や。 なに を みつけた んじゃな。
どれ、 どれ、 わし が ほって やろう。」
おじいさん は、 もって きた くわ を
ふりあげて、 やっこら よいこら
土 を ほりました。

ある 日 の こと です。
It happened one day.

おじいさん は、 シロ を つれて、
The old man took along Shiro, and

山（やま） へ いきました。
went to the mountain.

おじいさん が たきぎ を とって いる と、
When the old man was gathering firewood,

シロ が きゅう に ほえて、
Shiro suddenly barked, and

まえ足（あし） で 土（つち） を ほりだしました。
began to dig out the ground with his forepaws.

「シロ や。 なに を みつけた んじゃな。
"Hey Shiro. What did you find?

どれ、 どれ、 わし が ほって やろう。」
Let me see, I will help you dig.

おじいさん は、 もって きた くわ を ふりあげて、
The old man swung up the hoe he brought with him, and

やっこら よいこら 土 を ほりました。
dug the earth as hard as he could.

おじいさん は、 おもわず りょう手（て） で 目（め） を かくしました。
土 の なか が ぴかぴか ひかって います。 大ばん 小（こ）ばん が
ざくざく でて きました。
おじいさん は びっくり する やら、 おどろく やら。 その
お 金（かね） を ふくろ に つめて、 いえ へ かえって いきました。

「やややっ、 これ は なん じゃ。
"Ooops. What is this here?

まぶしい、 まぶしい。」
Dazzling, dazzling."

おじいさん は、 おもわず りょう手（て） で 目（め） を かくしました。
In spite of himself, the old man covered his eyes with both hands.

土 の なか が ぴかぴか ひかって います。
Inside the ground was glittering.

大ばん 小（こ）ばん が ざくざく でて きました。
Large and small gold coins came out (of the ground).

おじいさん は びっくり する やら、 おどろく やら。
The old man was surprised and amazed.

その お 金（かね） を ふくろ に つめて、
He packed that money in a bag, and

いえ へ かえって いきました。
went back home.

こがね の 山 を まえ に、 おじいさん が おばあさん に はなし を
して いる と、 となり の よくばり じいさん が やって きました。
「こりゃあ、 すごい おたから じゃ。 どこで 手 に いれた んじゃ。」
よくばり じいさん は、 ぐびり と のど を ならしました。 そして、
はなし を きく と、
「それじゃ、 わし にも いぬ を かして くれろ。 わし も 山 へ いって くる。」
と いって、 シロ を つれて いきました。

「たまげた。 たまげた。
"Startling. Startling!

わし は きも を つぶす ところ じゃった よ。」
I am about to be astounded!"

こがね の 山 を まえ に、
In front of the mountain of gold,

おじいさん が おばあさん に はなし を して いる と、
when the old man told the story to the old woman,

となり の よくばり じいさん が やって きました。
the greedy old man neighbor approached.

「こりゃあ、 すごい おたから じゃ。
"What a great treasure it is!

どこで 手 に いれた んじゃ。」
Where did you get it?"

よくばり じいさん は、 ぐびり と のど を ならしました。
The greedy old man made a swallowing sound with his throat.

そして、 はなし を きく と、
And then, when he listened to the story, he said

「それじゃ、 わし にも いぬ を かして くれろ。
"Therefore, please lend the dog to me.

わし も 山 へ いって くる。」
I will also go to the mountain."

と いって、 シロ を つれて いきました。
and took Shiro with him.

つぎ の 日、 よくばり じいさん は、 シロ を ひっぱって、 山 へ
いきました。
いつまで たって も、 シロ は ほえません。 よくばり じいさん は
いやがる シロ を たたいて、 むり に なかせました。
「わかった。 わかった。 ここ だな。 ここ だな。」
よくばり じいさん は、 よろこんで 土 を ほりました。

つぎ の 日、 よくばり じいさん は、
The next day, the greedy old man,

シロ を ひっぱって、 山 へ いきました。
went to the mountain pulling Shiro.

いつまで たって も、 シロ は ほえません。
But Shiro never barked at all.

よくばり じいさん は いやがる シロ を たたいて、
むり に なかせました。
The greedy old man slapped and unreasonably made to bark,
the reluctant Shiro.

「わかった。 わかった。
"I understand. I understand.

ここ だな。 ここ だな。」
In here. In here."

よくばり じいさん は、 よろこんで 土 を ほりました。
The greedy old man happily dug the ground.

石（いし）ころ ばかり。 小ばん は 一まい も でて きません。
「この いぬ め。 よくも わし を だました な。」
よくばり じいさん は はら を たて、 シロ を
ころして、 その あな に うめて しまいました。

ところが でて きた の は、
However the thing that came out, were

かえる や むかで や 石（いし）ころ ばかり。
only things like frogs and centipedes and rocks.

小ばん は 一まい も でて きません。
Not even one gold coin came out.

「この いぬ め。 よくも わし を だました な。」
"This damned dog. How dare you cheat me!"

よくばり じいさん は はら を たて、
The greedy old man became angry, and

シロ を ころして、
he killed Shiro, and

その あな に うめて しまいました。
burried him in the hole.

よる に なって も よくばり じいさん は、 シロ を かえし に きません。
シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん が、 となり の いえ へ いく と、
「あんな いぬ、 ころして うめて しまった さ。 目じるし に まつ の
なえ を 一ぽん、 その うえ に うえて おいた ぞ。」
よくばり じいさん は、 ぷんぷん おこり ながら いいました。
シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん は、 なき ながら いえ へ
かえって いきました。 そして、 つぎ の 日 の あさ、 おばあさん と
シロ の おはか へ でかけました。
すると、 まつ の なえ は ひとばん の うちに 大きな 木（き） に
なって いました。

よる に なって も よくばり じいさん は、
Even though it became night, the greedy old man

シロ を かえし に きません。
did not take Shiro back.

シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん が、
The old man who loved Shiro,

となり の いえ へ いく と、
went to the neighbor's house, and

「あんな いぬ、 ころして うめて しまった さ。
"Such a dog, I killed and burried it.

目じるし に まつ の なえ を 一ぽん、 その うえ に うえて おいた ぞ。」
For a marker I planted one pine seedling over it."

よくばり じいさん は、 ぷんぷん おこり ながら いいました。
the greedy old man said in anger.

シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん は、
The old man who loved Shiro,

なき ながら いえ へ かえって いきました。
went back home while crying.

そして、 つぎ の 日 の あさ、
And then, the morning of the next day,

おばあさん と シロ の おはか へ でかけました。
with the old woman, he went out to Shiro's grave.

すると、 まつ の なえ は ひとばん の
うちに 大きな 木（き） に なって いました。
And then, in one night the pine seedling became a big tree.

うす の なか の おこめ が、 みんな こがね に かわって
あふれ だしました。
そこ へ、 となり の ばあさん が やって きました。
うす から あふれる こがね を みる と、 ばあさん は
ぐびり と のど を ならしました。 そして、
「この うす、 ちょっくら うち にも かして くれろ。」
と うす を かついで いきました。

おじいさん と おばあさん は、
The old man and old woman,

まつ の 木 を きって、 うす を つくりました。
cut the pine tree and made a mortar.

その うす で おもち を つく と、
In that mortar they made rice cakes, and

小ばん が ちゃりーん。
small gold coins chariin.

ふた つき つく と、
With the second stroke,

大ばん が ちゃりちゃりーん。
large gold coins charichariin.

うす の なか の おこめ が、
The rice inside the mortar,

みんな こがね に かわって あふれ だしました。
all changed to gold coins, and began to overflow.

そこ へ、 となり の ばあさん が やって きました。
The old lady neighbor approached, to there.

うす から あふれる こがね を みる と、
When she saw the gold coins overflowing from the mortar,

ばあさん は ぐびり と のど を ならしました。
the old woman made a swallowing sound, gubiri.

そして、
And then,

「この うす、 ちょっくら うち にも かして くれろ。」
"Lend the mortar to me too for a while."

と うす を かついで いきました。
and she went carrying the mortar.

もやして しまいました。

じいさん の かお も、 ばあさん の かお も どろ だらけ。
The old man's face and the old woman's face were also covered with mud.

おこった よくばり じいさん は、
The angry greedy old man,

うす を たたきわって、
smashed the mortar, and

かまど で もやして しまいました。
burned it on the stove.

いくら でも もって いけ。 かまど の そうじ が たすかる わ。」
シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん は、 かまど の
した から はい を かきだす と、 ざる に いれて、 とぼとぼ
いえ へ かえって いきました。

シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん が、
The old man who loved Shiro,

うす を かえして もらい に いく と、
went to get the mortar back, and

となり の よくばり じいさん は、
the neighbor greedy old man,

目 を つりあげました。
had a fierce look in his eyes.

「うす を かえせ と？
"You want the mortar back?

あんな うす は な、
Such a mortar,

たたきわって もやして しまった よ。
I smashed and burned it.

ほし けりゃ いくら でも もって いけ。
If you want it, take as much (of the ashes) as you want.

かまど の そうじ が たすかる わ。」
It will help me to clean the cooking stove."

シロ を かわいがって いた おじいさん は、
The old man who loved Shiro,

かまど の した から はい を かきだす と、
from below the cooking stove he scraped up the ashes, and

ざる に いれて、
put it in a bamboo basket, and

とぼとぼ いえ へ かえって いきました。
trudged back home.

あたり に ぱあっと はい が とびちりました。
すると、 どう でしょう。
はい が かかった みち の かれ 草（くさ） に、
いろとりどり の 花（はな） が、 いっせい に さきだしました。
まるで 春（はる） の お花ばたけ の よう です。 さびしい
こころ が、 すっかり あかるく なりました。
「これは、 ふしぎ じゃ。 もっと たくさん 花 を さかせ よう。」
おじいさん は、 大きな さくら の かれ木 に のぼる と、
「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
おもいきり はい を まきました。

その とき です。
It was that time.

きゅう に かぜ が ふいて きて、
Suddenly a wind came blowing, and

あたり に ぱあっと はい が とびちりました。
the ashes scattered around.

すると、 どう でしょう。
And then, what a surprise.

はい が かかった みち の かれ 草（くさ） に、
On the withered grass covered with ashes on the path,

いろとりどり の 花（はな） が、
colorful flowers,

いっせい に さきだしました。
bloomed out all at once.

まるで 春（はる） の お花ばたけ の よう です。
It looks like a flower field in Spring.

さびしい こころ が、 すっかり あかるく なりました。
His sad heart became completely cheerful.

「これは、 ふしぎ じゃ。 もっと たくさん 花 を さかせ よう。」
"How wonderful this is. Let me make many more flowers bloom."

おじいさん は、
The old man

大きな さくら の かれ木 に のぼる と、
climbed a large dead cherry tree, and

「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
"Dead tree, dead tree, bloom!"

おもいきり はい を まきました。
He scattered ash to his heart's content.

「これは きれい じゃ。 あの 木 も さかせて みよう。」
おじいさん は、 となり の 木 に のぼって、
「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
大きな こえ で、 おもいきり はい を まきました。
かれ木 は たちまち つぼみ を つけて、 いっせい に
花 を ひらきました。

さくら の 木 は、 花ざかり。
The cherry tree was in full bloom.

「これは きれい じゃ。
"How beautiful this is!

あの 木 も さかせて みよう。」
Let me try and make that tree bloom."

おじいさん は、 となり の 木 に のぼって、
The old man climbed the next tree, and

「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
"Dead tree, dead tree, bloom!"

大きな こえ で、 おもいきり はい を まきました。
he said with a big voice, and scattered ash to his heart's content.

かれ木 は たちまち つぼみ を つけて、
Suddenly buds came out from the dead tree, and

いっせい に 花 を ひらきました。
all together the flowers opened.

花ざかり、花盛り = be in full bloom
たちまち = right away, at once, suddenly
つぼみ = a bud
つける、つけます、つけて = come out?
いっせい、一斉 = all together
ひらく、ひらきます、ひらいて、開く = open (flower, fan, umbrella)

ちょうど そこ へ、 とのさま が
とおりかかりました。
「みごと じゃ。 みごと じゃ、 じい。 日（に）本（っぽん）一（いち） の
はなさかじじい に ほうび を とらせ よう ぞ。」
とのさま は おお よろこび です。
おじいさん は、 たくさん ほうび を もらって、
かえって いきました。
いえ の かげ から、 これ を みて いた のが、
となり の よくばり じいさん です。

ちょうど そこ へ、 とのさま が とおりかかりました。
Just then, a feudal lord happened to pass.

「みごと じゃ。 みごと じゃ、 じい。
"Beautiful! Wonderful, old man!

日（に）本（っぽん）一（いち） の はなさかじじい

に ほうび を とらせ よう ぞ。」
will win a prize."

とのさま は おお よろこび です。
The feudal lord is very pleased.

おじいさん は、 たくさん ほうび を もらって、
The old man received many prizes, and

かえって いきました。
returned home.

いえ の かげ から、 これ を みて いた のが、
となり の よくばり じいさん です。
The greedy old neighbor man saw this happening from behind his house.

かまど の した から、 のこった はい を かきあつめて、
おおいそぎ で とのさま の ところ へ いきました。
「お とのさま。 わし も 日本一 の はなさかじじい です。
この 木 に 花 を さかせます。」
そう いって、 かれ木 に のぼり、
「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
おもいきり、 はい を まきました。

「よし。 わし も ほうび を もらおう。」
"Alright. I will also win a prize."

かまど の した から、 のこった はい を かきあつめて、
He collected the remaining ash from below the cooking stove, and

おおいそぎ で とのさま の ところ へ いきました。
in a great hurry went to the place of the feudal lord.

「お とのさま。 わし も 日本一 の はなさかじじい です。
"My feudal lord. I am also Japan's best Grandfather Cherry-Blossom.

この 木 に 花 を さかせます。」
I will make this tree bloom."

そう いって、
He said that, and

かれ木 に のぼり、
climbed a dead tree,

「かれ木 よ、 かれ木 よ、 花 が さけーー」
"Dead tree, dead tree, bloom flowers!"

おもいきり、 はい を まきました。
and scattered ash to his heart's content.

とのさま に かかって、 たいへんな さわぎ に なりました。
「ぶれいもの。 おとのさま に なに を する。」
となり の よくばり じいさん は、 けらい に なわ で しばられて、
とうとう ろうや へ つれて いかれて しまいました。
ーーー「はなさかじじい」 の おはなし、 これで おしまい。

ところが、 花 が さく どころか、
However, the flowers far from blooming

はい が みんな とのさま に かかって、
all the ashes covered the feudal lord, and

たいへんな さわぎ に なりました。
caused a big trouble.

「ぶれいもの。 おとのさま に なに を する。」
"You are insolent. What are you doing to the feudal lord."

となり の よくばり じいさん は、 けらい に なわ で しばられて、
The retainer tied up the greedy old neighbor man with a rope, and

とうとう ろうや へ つれて いかれて しまいました。
finally took him to prison.

ーーー「はなさかじじい」 の おはなし、 これで おしまい。
There ends the "Hanasakajiji" story.
