むかし ある ところ に、 なか の いい ふうふ が いました。
子ども を ほしい と おもって いました が、 いつ に
なって も うまれません。
ふうふ は、 まい 日 おみや へ でかけて は、
ぽん ぽん と 手 を うって、
「どうか わしら に 子ども を さずけて くだされ。
おやゆび ほど の 小さな 子 でも けっこう です から。」
と、 かみさま に おねがい して いました。

むかし ある ところ に、 なか の いい ふうふ が いました。
Long ago someplace, there was a very close husband and wife.

子ども を ほしい と おもって いました が、
They were thinking that they want a child,

いつ に なって も うまれません。
but it was never born.

ふうふ は、 まい 日 おみや へ でかけて は、
Every day the couple went out to a little shrine,

ぽん ぽん と 手 を うって、
they clapped their hands,

「どうか わしら に 子ども を さずけて くだされ。
"Please grant us a child.

おやゆび ほど の 小さな 子 でも けっこう です から。」

と、 かみさま に おねがい して いました。

あかちゃん が うまれました。
ほんと に おやゆび ほど の 小さな
男の子 です。
「おう、 おう。 かわいい 子 じゃ。 うまれた
ばかり で、 いま は こんなに 小さい が、 そのうち
きっと 大きな げんきな 子 に なる だろう。」
とし を とった ふうふ は、 おおよろこび です。
その 子 に、 いっすんぼうし と 名づけて（なづけて）、 だいじ に
そだてる こと に しました。

すると ある 日 の こと、 あかちゃん が うまれました。
And one day, the baby was born.

ほんと に おやゆび ほど の 小さな 男の子 です。
It was truly a thumb sized little boy.

「おう、 おう。 かわいい 子 じゃ。
"Oh, oh! It is a cute child.

うまれた ばかり で、 いま は こんなに 小さい が、
Just after being born, he is so small,

そのうち きっと 大きな げんきな 子 に なる だろう。」
I am certain that before long he will become a large healthy boy."

とし を とった ふうふ は、 おおよろこび です。
The old couple, were very happy.

その 子 に、 いっすんぼうし と 名づけて（なづけて）、
They gave the name Issunboushi to the boy,

だいじ に そだてる こと に しました。
and they decided to bring him up with a lot of care.

いっすんぼうし は、 おかあさん から
かたな の かわり に ぬいばり を 一 ぽん もらう と、
むぎわら の さや に いれて、 こし に さしました。
それから たたみ に 手 を ついて、 いいました。
「これ から わたし は、 みやこ へ まいります。
りっぱに なって、 もどって きます。」
おとうさん と おかあさん は びっくりしました が、
いっすんぼうし の けっしん は かわりません。

ある 日 の こと です。
One day.

いっすんぼうし は、
Issunboushi,

おかあさん から かたな の かわり に ぬいばり を 一 ぽん もらう と、
from his mother received a sewing needle in place of a sword,

むぎわら の さや に いれて、 こし に さしました。
he put it in a straw sheath, worn on his waist.

それから たたみ に 手 を ついて、 いいました。
After that he placed his hands on the tatami and said.

「これ から わたし は、 みやこ へ まいります。
"From now I am going to the capital.

りっぱに なって、 もどって きます。」
I will become magnificent, and come back."

おとうさん と おかあさん は びっくりしました が、
Father and mother were surprised,

いっすんぼうし の けっしん は かわりません。
they could not change Issunboushi's determination.

いっすんぼうし は、 おとうさん と おかあさん に
みおくられ ながら、 おわん の ふね に のって、
力 いっぱい はし の かい を こぎ だしました。

大きな 川 を さかのぼって いかなければ なりません。

「からだ に き を つける ん だ よ。」

ようじん。 ようじん。」
いっすんぼうし は、 まわり に き を つけ ながら、
みち を あるいて いきました。
すると、 りっぱな 門 の ある
やしき の まえ に でました。

なん 日 も かかって、 やっと みやこ に つきました。
It took many days, at last he arrived at the capital.

みやこ は にぎやか です。
The capital is lively.

たくさん の ひと が、 いそぎ足（いそぎあし） で あるいて います。
So many people, are walking with hurried steps.

うま や くるま も とおります。
Horses and cars pass by.

「まごまごして いる と、 ふみつぶされて しまう ぞ。
"Be flurried, and be completely smashed underfoot.

ようじん。 ようじん。」
Be careful. Be careful."

いっすんぼうし は、 まわり に き を つけ ながら、
While being careful of his surroundings, Issunboushi

みち を あるいて いきました。
went walking on the road.

すると、 りっぱな 門 の ある やしき の まえ に でました。
And then, he came to the front of a mansion that had a magnificient gate.

いっすんぼうし は 門 を はいって、 げんかん の
まえ に たちました。 そして、
「お たのみ もーす。」
と、 よばわりました。
なに も、 へんじ が ありません。
そこで もう いちど、
「お たのみ もーす。」
おなか の そこ から、 大ごえ で
よばわりました。

「だいじん の おやしき だ な。
"It is the mansion of a minister.

ここ で しばらく はたらかせて もらおう。」
Here I might receive work for a while."

いっすんぼうし は 門 を はいって、 げんかん の まえ に たちました。
Issunboushi entered the gate, and stood in front of the entrance.

そして、
Then,

「お たのみ もーす。」
"Excuse me"

と、 よばわりました。
he said, and called around.

なに も、 へんじ が ありません。
There was no answer.

そこで もう いちど、
Therefore again,

「お たのみ もーす。」
"Excuse me."

おなか の そこ から、 大ごえ で よばわりました。
From the bottom of his chest, he called around with a big voice.

やしき の なか から みなり の りっぱな だいじん が でて きました。
a magnificently dressed minister came out from within the mansion.

「はて。 だれも おら ぬ。 みょうじゃ な。
"What! There is no one there! Strange!

たしかに だれか よんで いた ようじゃっ た が。。。。。。」
Surely someone was calling, it seems, but......"

だいじん は、 きょろきょろ あたり を みまわして いました。
The minister, was looking around the area.

いっすんぼうし は、 はきもの の かげ から 手 を ふりました。

"Ooh. What is this! Who are you?"

いっすんぼうし は、 ていねいに あたま を さげました。
「よし、 よし。 かわいい 子 じゃ。 いつまでも ここ に
おる が よい。」
だいじん は、 よろこんで いっすんぼうし の ねがい を
ききいれて くれました。

だいじん は いっすんぼうし を つまんで、 てのひら に のせました。
The minister picked up Issunboushi, and put him on the palm of his hand.

「わたし は いっすんぼうし と もうします。
"I am called Issunboushi.

どうか この おやしき で はたらかせて ください。
Please let me work in this mansion.

おねがい いたします。」
Please (do)."

いっすんぼうし は、 ていねいに あたま を さげました。
Issunboushi politely bowed his head.

「よし、 よし。 かわいい 子 じゃ。 いつまでも ここ に おる が よい。」
"Good, all right! Your are a cute child. It is good for you to stay here forever."

だいじん は、
The minister,

よろこんで いっすんぼうし の ねがい を ききいれて くれました。
with pleasure granted Issunboushi's wish.

おに は いっすんぼうし を つまみあげる と、 ぱくり と
口 に いれて、 のみこんで しまいました。

ある 日 の こと、
What happened one day,

いっすんぼうし は おひめさま の おとも を して、
Issunboushi was an attendant of the princess,

かんのんさま へ おまいり に でかけました。
they went out to visit the shrine of Kannon.

その かえりみち です。
It was on their way home.

林 の なか から、 きゅうに おに が 二 ひき とびだして きて、
From within the woods, suddenly two devils came running out,

おひめさま を さらおう と しました。
and tried to kidnap the princess.

「なに を する ん だ。
"What are you doing?

おひめさま に らんぼう する やつ は ゆるさ ぬ ぞ！」
I do not forgive the guy who does violence to the princess you know!"

いっすんぼうし は、 はり の かたな を ぬいて、
Issunboushi drew his needle katana,

おに に とびかかって いきました。
and threw himself upon the devil.

「なん じゃ、 おまえ は。 なまいきな こと を いう な。
"What are you. Don't say a shameless thing.

くって しまう ぞ！」
I will completely eat you!"

おに は いっすんぼうし を つまみあげる と、
When the devil picked Issunboushi up in his fingers,

ぱくり と 口 に いれて、 のみこんで しまいました。
he put Issunboushi in his wide open mouth, and completely swallowed him.

いっすんぼうし は、 はり の かたな を ふりあげて、
おなか の なか を さし ながら はしりまわった から、

The inside of the devil's stomach, is quite dark.

He could not see anything.

いっすんぼうし は、 はり の かたな を ふりあげて、
Issunboushi swung up his needle katana,

おなか の なか を さし ながら はしりまわった から、
the running around while pricking the inside of the devil's stomach,

たまりません。
was unbearable.

「いてててて。。。。。。 こりゃ、 たまら ん。」
おに は あわてて にげだしました。

「おまえ が くわ ぬ なら、 おれ が くうーー」
(the other devil says) "If you don't eat him, I will eat him."

もう 一 ぴき の おに が、 いっすんぼうし を つまんで、
The other devil, picked Issunboushi up in his fingers,

また 口 に いれよう と しました。
and again tried to put him in his mouth.

いっすんぼうし は、 するり と おに の 手 から のがれる と、
When Issunboushi smoothly escaped from the devil's hand,

かたな で おに の 目 を つきました。
he pricked the devil's eye with his katana.

「いてててて。。。。。。 こりゃ、 たまら ん。」
"Ouch! This is unbearable."

おに は あわてて にげだしました。
The devils ran away in confusion.

「これ は、 おに の たからもの、 うちでのこづち です。 ふり ながら
のぞみ を いえば、 なん でも かなう と いいます よ。」
「おひめさま。 それ なら、 わたし の せ が のびる ように、
こづち を ふって ください。」

「おひめさま。 これ は、 なん でしょう？」
"Princess. What would this be?"

おに が にげて いった あと に、 小さな こづち が おちて いました。
After the devil ran away, a small hammer was fallen.

「これ は、 おに の たからもの、 うちでのこづち です。
"This is the devil's treasure, it is a magic hammer (from which things comes out).

ふり ながら のぞみ を いえば、 なん でも かなう と いいます よ。」
It is said, if you say your wish while shaking, anything will come true."

「おひめさま。 それ なら、 わたし の せ が のびる ように、
"Princess. In that case, so that my height should grow,

こづち を ふって ください。」
please shake the hammer."

おひめさま は すぐに こづち を ふって くれました。
the princess immediately shook the hammer for him.

「いっすんぼうし、 大きく なーれ。
"Issunboushi, become big.

いっすんぼうし、 大きく なーれ。」
Issunboushi, become big."

すると、 いっすんぼうし の からだ が ずんずん のびて、
Then, Issunboushi's body rapidly grew, and

りっぱな わかもの に なりました。
he became a magnificent young man.

小さくて、 よく わかりませんでした が、 みれば みる ほど
うつくしい かお を して います。 そのうえ、 おそろしい
おに を たいじ する ほど、 つよい わかもの です。
いっすんぼうし の こと を、 すっかり すきに なった
だいじん は、 いっすんぼうし を おひめさま の むこ に
むかえる こと に しました。
「めでたい。 めでたい。
いわい じゃ。 いわい じゃ。」

小さくて、 よく わかりませんでした が、
Being small, no one understood well,

みれば みる ほど うつくしい かお を して います。
but when they looked, the more they looked, the more beautiful his face was.

そのうえ、 おそろしい おに を たいじ する ほど、 つよい わかもの です。
Besides, he is such a strong young man, that he can get rid of the terrible devil.

いっすんぼうし の こと を、
About Issunboushi,

すっかり すきに なった だいじん は、
the minister came to completely like him,

いっすんぼうし を おひめさま の むこ に むかえる こと に しました。
and chose Issunboushi as the groom of the princess.

「めでたい。 めでたい。
"Happy. Happy.

いわい じゃ。 いわい じゃ。」
Congratulations. Congratulations."
