おじいさん と、 おばあさん が いました。
ある 日 の こと です。
「ばあさん や、 ちょっくら 山 へ いって、
しば を かって くる よ。」
おじいさん は そう いって、 いえ の
うら に ある 山 へ、 でかけて
いきました。

むかし ある ところ に、

とても こころ の やさしい おじいさん と、 おばあさん が いました。

"Old woman, I am going to the mountain for a little while,

おじいさん は そう いって、

いえ の うら に ある 山 へ、 でかけて いきました。
and went out to the mountain that was behind the house.

こえ じゃ な。」

When the old man was cutting firewood,

「デンガショツ、 デンガショツ。」
"denkashou, denkashou." (just a sound)

むこう の 林（はやし） の なか から、
From within the woods over there,

おかしな こえ が きこえて きました。
a strange voice came to be heard.

「はて？ なん じゃろう。
"What!? What would that be.

みょうな こえ じゃ な。」
It is a strange voice!"

The old man cheered as much as he could.

けれども、 おじいさん の いえ の ねずみ は、
However, the mouse from the old man's house,

power is weak, there is no help for it.

なんど やって も、 スポン スッポン と、
No matter how many times he did, "spon, sppon" (flinging away sound),

なげとばされて しまいます。

おじいさん は、

じぶん の いえ の やせた ねずみ が かわいそうに なりました。
came to feel sorry for his own home's skinny mouse.

おじいさん は、 ふうっ と いき を

おじいさん は おばあさん に ねずみ の はなし を しました。
the old man told the old woman the story of the mouse.

「かわいそうで な。
"It is sad.

わし は、 なみだ が でた わ。
My tears go out from me.

いくら かかって いって も、
No matter how many times he attacks,

スポン スッポン なげられて、
'spon, sppon' he is flung,

どろ だらけ に なって な。
he becomes covered with dirt.

力 が でる ように して やり たい が、
I want to make an effort to give power,

うち は びんぼう で おいしい たべもの など ない し な。」
because my house is poor, there is no delicious food."

おじいさん は、 ふうっ と いき を はきました。
The old man sighed, letting out a deep breath.

おじいさん と おばあさん は、

おもち を だんご に まるめて、
rounded the rice cakes into dumplings,

ねずみ が よく かお を だす たな の 上 に おきました。
and put them on the shelf where the mouse often appears.

「デンカショッ、 デンカショッ。」
きのう と おなじ ように、 ねずみ たち の
かけごえ が きこえて きました。
「おう、 おう。 やっとる。 やっとる。」
おじいさん は、 にこにこ 林（はやし） の
なか へ はいって いきました。

つぎ の 日 の あさ、 おもち は ぜんぶ なくなって いました。
The morning of the next day, all of the rice cakes were gone.

「よし、 よし。 これで、 うんと 力 が ついた だろう。」
"Good, good. By this, he will have added a lot of power."

おじいさん は よろこび ながら、 また 山 へ でかけて いきました。
While feeling happy, the old man went out again to the mountain.
The old man happily went out again to the mountain.

そして、 しば を かって いる と、
And then, when he was cutting firewood,

「デンカショッ、 デンカショッ。」
"Denkansho, denkansho."

きのう と おなじ ように、
In the same manner as yesterday,

ねずみ たち の かけごえ が きこえて きました。
the shouts of the mice came to be heard.

「おう、 おう。 やっとる。 やっとる。」
"Oh, oh. They are doing. They are doing."

おじいさん は、 にこにこ 林（はやし） の なか へ はいって いきました。
The old man entered the interior of the woods with a smile.

"How strange. You despised, why do you suddenly become strong?"

ちょうじゃ の いえ の ねずみ が、 くび を かしげ ながら いいました。
The mouse from the millionaire's house, tilted his head while asking.

「おら の いえ は びんぼう だ から、 おまえ が
たくさん おかね を もって きたら な。」
「もって いく。 もって いく。 おかね なら、
いくら でも ある からーー」

「おらぁ、 ゆんべ うんと もち くった から、 つよく なった ん じゃ。」
"I became strong because last night I ate a lot of rice cakes."

おじいさん の いえ の ねずみ は、
The mouse from the old man's house,

もりあがった うで を じまん そうに みせ ながら、 いいました。
said while proudly showing his swolen arm.

「いい なあ。
"How good you are!

おら とこ の いえ は、 かねもち でも けちんぼ で、 もち なんか つか
ぬ。
My house, is rich but stingy, they don't pound things like rice cakes.

こんや おめえ の いえ いく から よ。
Therefore I will go to your house tonight.

おら に も もち くわせて くれ ろ。」
Let me also eat rice cakes."

ちょうじゃ の いえ の ねずみ が、 いいました。
The mouse from the millionaire's house, said.

「おら の いえ は びんぼう だ から、
"My house is poor, therefore,

おまえ が たくさん おかね を もって きたら な。」
it is ok if you bring a lot of money."

「もって いく。 もって いく。
"I will bring. I will bring.

おかね なら、 いくら でも ある からーー」
If it is money, I have plenty."

"In that case, let's boil all the rice grains,

二 ひき に いっぱい もち を たべさせて やりましょう。
let's feed a lot of rice cakes to the two mice.

お正月 は まだ さき の こと。
New year is still in the future.

どうにか なりますよ。」
We can do somehow."

そこで また おもち を ついて、 たな の 上 に おきました。
Thereupon again they pounded rice cakes, and put them on the shelf.

やさしい おばあさん は、 二 ひき の ねずみ の ため に、
The kind old lady, for the two mice,

赤い（あかい） ふんどし を 二 本（にほん） つくって、
made two red loincloths,

おもち の わき に おきました。
and put them next to the rice cakes.

When they woke up in the morning, the rice cakes and loin cloths were gone.

「ばあさん や、 ゆんべ は ちょうじゃどん の いえ の ねずみ が、
きた ようじゃ な。
"Old woman, it seems that last night the mouse from the millionaire's house came.

さて、 きょう は どっち が かつ かな。 たのしみ じゃ。」
Well, I wonder which will win today. It is amusing."

おじいさん は、 わくわく し ながら、 山 へ でかけよう と しました。
The old man, while excited, prepared to go out to the mountain.

Then, in the corner of the house, three gold coins had been left.

「ばあさん や、 ばあさん や。
"Old woman, old woman.

ちょうじゃ どん の いえ の ねずみ は、
The mouse from the millionaire's house,

ほんと に おたから を もって きた よ。」
truly brought a treasure."

おじいさん は びっくりして、 おばあさん を よびました。
The old man was surprised and called the old woman.

no matter how many times they played, the game could not be decided.

with the money that the mouse from the millionaire's house brought,

いつまでも しあわせに くらしました と さ。
lived hapily ever after.
