Creating Multi-cellularity

In organic life, the transition from single to multi-celled forms unleashed a phenomenal explosion of diversity and complexity. It would seem then that the transition to multi-cellular forms could generate analogous diversity and complexity in synthetic systems. In the case of digital organisms, it would also lead to the evolution of parallel processes, which could provide us with new paradigms for the design of parallel software. The creation of multi-celled digital organisms remains an important challenge.
