Understanding Evolvability

Attempts are now underway to inoculate evolution into many artificial systems, with mixed results. Some genetic languages evolve readily, while others do not. We do not yet know why, and this is a fundamental and critically important issue. What are the elements of evolvability? Efforts are needed to directly address this issue. One approach that would likely be rewarding would be to systematically identify features of a class of languages (such as machine languages), and one by one, vary each feature, to determine how evolvability is affected by the state of each feature.
